What Is Structural Drying?
Structural drying is the removal of water and excess moisture from structures, sometimes deep within the materials that make up the structure. Majority of water is removed by pumping it out, draining it, or mopping it up, depending on the circumstances. The rest is then extracted from the structure using incredibly powerful vacuum equipment. During the process, any building materials or items that cannot be salvaged are removed. High-volume fans and air movers can also be used to promote evaporation, and dehumidification and temperature control are encouraged.
Tips for Preventing Water Damage
Water damage weakens your home’s foundation, which plays an important role as the very core of your house. In many cases, flooding and water damage can be prevented. Wondering how you can help keep water out of your home? Here are a few things to consider:
- Ensure proper drainage: If possible, make sure your yard is sloped away from your foundation to prevent the pooling of water in or near your home. You should also make sure to clean your gutters routinely, and direct downspouts anywhere from five to 10 feet away from your home.
- Test your sump pump regularly: If you have a sump pump, it is important that you check it frequently to make sure it is working properly, especially during storm season.
- Don’t wait to fix water leaks: If you have a dripping faucet or dripping pipes, don’t ignore it. Repair any leaks, and cracked pipes or caulking, as soon as possible. Dark spots on ceilings or under pipes can indicate water leaks, as well. You should also check your roof routinely for missing, loose, or damaged shingles that may need fixing or replacing.
