How to Protect Your Home from Foundation Water Damage

Water Damage

The foundation is the cornerstone of every home. The strength of a home is only as good as the foundation it is built upon. In this article, we will discuss some of the ways you can protect the foundation of your home from water damage.

Maintain Your Gutter System

Let's take this from the top and work our way down. The first and easiest way to protect your home's foundation from water damage is to have an excellent rainwater gutter system on your roof. Most roofs are pitched in order to prevent water from pooling since that can cause the roof to collapse. This pitch causes water to run down the sides instead of pooling on top of the roof. However, this does not solve all of your problems because if given a chance, that water will pool along the sides of the house, and over time that pooling water will erode the foundation.

To prevent water damage to your home's foundation, you must invest in a proper gutter system that will direct the water to a safe distance away from your home.

Watch For Slope Creep

The second most common cause of water damage to a home's foundation is similar to the first one in that it also comes from rain.

If your home sits on a slope, you need to keep an eye on the moisture level of that slope. A sloping wall could collect rainwater, and over time, that collection of rain could cause water damage to the foundation of your home.  Some warning signs of slope creep are sloping floors and cracks in the drywall.

Check for Leaking Pipes

The third event that could cause damage to your home's foundation is a leaking or busted water pipe. In this scenario, water usually collects under the foundation, causing a shift in the ground, which causes the foundation to crack, which leads to the structural integrity being compromised. A busted pipe in your basement could be leaking in such a way that the water seeps on the outside and does not appear immediately in your home, but it can be slowly softening the ground around your foundation and leading to water damage to the foundation.
